The Arduous Path of Architecture

As the newest licensed architect at Renovation Design Group I'd like to tell you the process I've been through over the last 11 years to get to this point.

Annie Vernon, AIA - Architect and founder of Renovation Design Group.

It all started with school. I attended the architecture program at the University of Utah. To give you an idea of it's competitive nature, of the 100 students in my Junior class, sixty were accepted into the undergraduate program and twenty-five were accepted into the Masters program. I can summarize it best by saying that it was very challenging and very time consuming. Students were known to answer the studio phone "architorture".

I worked my way through school at a local architecture firm, first as a drafter and eventually as a project manager. After graduation I began working full time to complete the requirements for the 3 year internship. I had just finished my internship as Ann, Jared, and I decided to start Renovation Design Group.

At the beginning of this year I began taking the 9 licensing exams. They cover everything from mechanical systems and structures to building planning and design. After spending $1100 and 45 hours in the testing center, I passed them all! I've applied for licensure with the state of Utah and am just waiting to get that little piece of paper in the mail that will make me officially official!

So, although it's been an arduous journey, I can't imagine doing anything else. I thoroughly enjoy working with people to help transform their homes into their dream homes! It's great to watch something I've designed actually get built and I feel very fortunate that I wake up each morning with the opportunity to do what I enjoy!
