FACTS & TRENDS
  • More and more Americans are making renovating a new national pastime. In 2002 alone, 170 billion (with a "b') dollars was spent in the home-improvement industry.
In the Salt Lake City-Ogden area $4.2 billion was spent in remodeling during the 1990-1999 period.

  • Kitchen and baths are the top rooms being remodeled, and they are being remodeled at an increasing rate. Whole-room kitchens and bath remodels are being done about every ten years now.

  • The increase in home improvement cable shows is adding fuel to the home improvement rage. Since the success of "Trading Spaces" at least 12 other shows have followed suit.

Engineered Stone Countertops

Engineered stone has no weak fissures and can be enineered in many unique colors.

Before you decide what counter top to put in your new kitchen, you may want to consider a relatively new product called engineered stone. Ninety percent of its mass consists of crushed stone, while the remaining ten percent is made of resins and pigments.

Because the stone is engineered, it has no weak fissures or veins that could crack like natural stone. It also means that you won't need to search all over the stone yard for matching pieces.

The toughest engineered stones are made from quartz. Some products that are made from quartz and won't scratch or stain include Silestone, Cambria, and Dupont's Zodiaq line. Others made from marble and other stones may need sealing.
